5 Songs you won't believe are on the official FIRST 'Do Not Play' list

FIRST Robotics events have changed dramatically over the years.  From sports stadiums to high school gymnasiums, ballpark concessions to cafeterias, and pipe & drape to...not pipe & drape(?), a lot is different about the competition as we know it today.  One thing that has been a mainstay throughout has been the DJ's and their music at the events.

Is the field not working?  Quick, play the Chicken Dance!  Does the MC think the crowd is getting sleepy after a long day of watching robots barely move?  Turn up the volume and put on the YMCA!  Trying to play some culturally relevant music but can't put on a real rap record?  Play the Cupid Shuffle!  The DJ's at a FIRST event has total control over the mood and the energy of the competition, so why is HQ putting a gag order on them by giving them a long list of songs they are not allowed to play?

Let's explore 5 of the most popular songs today that FIRST HQ has relegated to their Do Not Play (DNP) list for, seemingly, no reason at all.

1. KYLE - iSpy feat. Lil Yachty

This song is a straight banger with it's catchy beat and a chorus that you just cant help but sing to yourself as you push your robot cart through the pits on your way to a match.  Couldn't you just imagine Dean and Woodie going full freak-mode with the dance moves to this song by KYLE and Lil Boat?
Billboard Hot 100 Top Spot: #4
Favorite Lyric: All this shade comin' at me, I wonder who throws it; They can't see the vision, boy they must be out of focus

2. Big Sean - Bounce Back

Big Sean goes hard in da paint on this track, and it's a certified FRC anthem.  What drive team hasn't returned to their pits with their heads hanging low after a tough loss, only to come back swinging in the next match after blasting this song in their pits?
Billboard Hot 100 Top Spot: #35
Favorite Lyric: Look, I woke up in beast mode; With my girl, that's beauty and the beast though

3. J. Cole - No Role Modelz

Yeah, gold medals are cool and all, but let's not forget that our man J. Cole went double platinum with no features.  This track, a definite 808 slapper, is one of many off the album 2014 Forest Hills Drive that FRC teams can relate to.  No Role Modelz, no mentors on your team?  No problem, #winanyway.
Billboard Hot 100 Top Spot: #36
Favorite Lyric: No role models and I'm here right now; No role models to speak of; Searchin' through my memory, my memory, I couldn't find one

4. Kanye West -  in Paris feat. Jay-Z

Team 1114, with the help of their mentor Karthik, made this song an instant classic during the 2012 FIRST competition season; Rebound Rumble.  Their robot Simbot Jordan was one of the best that year, and if it weren't for some absolutely "cray" stuff happening on Einstein, they just might have had their fish filet and eaten it, too.  Nonetheless, Ye and HOV have teamed up to bless us with this hit.
Billboard Hot 100 Top Spot: #5
Favorite Lyric: Psycho, I'm liable to be go Michael; Take your pick, Jackson, Tyson, Jordan, Game 6

5. Drake - Big Rings feat. Future

The FIRST family of competitions (FLL, FTC, and FRC) may only give out trophies, banners, and medals to event winners, but real O.G.s know that the sign of a true winner is a championship ring.  And while you can't get one by winning a FIRST event, you can always bump this Drizzy/Future collab while you're collecting your medals after the finals end.
Billboard Hot 100 Top Spot: #52
Favorite Lyric: Look at the smile on me, look at the owl on me; I do not chase girls, but they run a mile for me
